For Cybertron! For our home! What war destroyed, we can rebuild - but only if we join with the Decepticons!
~ Sentinel explaining why he must join the Decepticons.
"Indeed I am! What you must realize, my Autobot brothers, is we were never going to win the war. For the sake of our planet's survival, a deal had to be made... with Megatron! *attacks Ironhide* (Ironhide: What... have... you... done?!) I hereby discharge you from duty!"
~ Sentinel Prime reveals his true colors and betraying the Autobots and killing Ironhide.
"Optimus... all I ever wanted... was the survival of our race... You must see why I had to betray you. (Optimus Prime: You didn't betray me. You betrayed yourself.) NO, OPTIMUS!"
~ Sentinel's last words.

Sentinel Prime was a turncoat Autobot Commander and a double agent. He mentored Optimus Prime. He was always patriotic to a fault towards Cybertron, and was a strong willed and determined leader, who held a firm belief in the position of his race in the universe, and demanded respect from all around him, which he earned by proving himself a fierce and powerful warrior. Sentinel was charged with the safety of his secret weapon, the Pillars, which he believed could save their dying planet. Eventually, his hopes to revive Cybertron to its golden age glory changed him, and he ultimately betrayed the Autobots to secure Cybertron's survival, but he was killed by Optimus in a final duel at the Battle of Chicago. His body was shown in Transformers: Age Of Extinction.

Biography

Main series

In past

Long ago, Sentinel Prime was the leader of the Autobots before Optimus Prime during the war on Cybertron. But as the conflict dragged on, with no end in sight, Sentinel found himself forced to make a drastic choice: a secret alliance with Megatron. Believing that it was only through the sacrifice of another world that Cybertron could be restored, Sentinel developed teleportational space bridge technology to transport resources across interstellar distances—but, knowing that Optimus would never condone his course of action, Sentinel kept his plans a secret, claiming the bridge was a means of transporting troops into battle. Sentinel's intention was to depart for the chosen planet—Earth—and meet Megatron there later, but during the battle that erupted around the departure of Sentinel's ship the Ark, the vessel was damaged and sent spiralling off into the depths of space, presumed lost forever. The war was left to continue with none save Megatron aware of Sentinel's treachery.

In 1961, the Ark crashed on Earth's moon. The impact was detected by NASA, triggering the space race of the 1960s and leading to the United States of America's eventual first trip to the moon in 1969, which was secretly an attempt to inspect the crashed alien ship. However, before Apollo 11 got there, a team of Decepticons led by Soundwave, who had tracked the vessel, removed the majority of the space bridge pillars from the ship to keep them out of human hands. The NASA astronauts found no trace of them, nor of Sentinel himself, safely sealed in the ship's crash vault with five remaining pillars.

Revenge of the Fallen

When in 2009 Sam Witwicky launched into a rambling lecture on the nature of space and time while in a trance brought on by the knowledge of the AllSpark entering his mind, he recalled Sentinel Prime's "expedition" to find Cybertron a new sun, commenting that it took "fourteen galactic convergences" to get an echo.

Dark of the Moon

After finding the power core of the Ark in Chernobyl, Optimus found out that the Ark was on the moon, and he and the other Autobots went to retrieve Sentinel and his Pillars. They found the dormant Prime and took him to Earth, where they kept him at the N.E.S.T. Base. When Sentinel awoke, he angrily attacked Optimus, before realising he was "among friends" . Sentinel asked where the Pillars were, and was told he only saved five, including the most important Control Pillar. Sentinel then scanned a Rosenbauer Panther Airport Fire Truck and took a drive with Optimus in Africa, who offered to return the Matrix of Leadership to him. Sentinel denied it, saying that on Earth, Optimus is his teacher, not the other way around.

Later, as Sentinel was being moved, the Autobots were chased by the Dreads. Knowing that all was in readiness, he revealed his centuries-long alliance with Megatron by slaying Ironhide with his Cosmic Rust cannon, tearing NEST headquarters apart to reclaim the pillars, and departing to meet his Decepticon co-conspirators at the Lincoln Memorial Optimus Prime arrived and pleaded with Sentinel to stop, but Sentinel refused, and opened a small space bridge portal above, through which Decepticon troops in waiting on the moon poured. That leading to a battle between the two Primes. Sentinel overpowered his former pupil, but spared his life.

Sentinel then deceived the United Nations, telling them that the Decepticons would take the resources they needed and leave if the "Autobot Rebels" were exiled from Earth. This was a clear lie, but the Autobots were exiled anyway, allowing Starscream to blow up their ship, seemingly killing all of them. Believing his only enemies to be dead, Sentinel had the Decepticons conquer the city and place the pillars in strategic locations around the world. He then slammed Megatron into a wall, reminding the Decepticon that they were partners, and that Prime was not his servant like Megatron would like to believe.

"You betrayed yourself"

With the Pillars in place, Sentinel activated the space bridge, and Cybertron emerged in Earth's orbit. Earth was not without defenders, however: Optimus and the Autobots had, in fact, staged their deaths, and had arrived in Chicago to stop Sentinel's plot. Optimus shot out the control pillar, deactivating the bridge, leading a furious Sentinel to engage him in battle once more. Unlike their last bout, Optimus held his own, leading Sentinel to call upon Decepticon fighter ships to fire on his ex-apprentice, while he broke off to fight his way through the other Autobots in an attempt to escape. NEST soldiers destroyed the ships, allowing Optimus to pursue Sentinel and re-engage him, but Sentinel overpowered Optimus, cutting off one of his arms and beating him to the ground. Sentinel rose his Primax Blade, ready to kill Optimus for good, but was shot in the back by Megatron, who had grown paranoid that Sentinel would end up leading the Decepticons and dispose of him afterwards. Megatron beat the already exhausted Sentinel down and punched him around, knocking off Sentinels war helmet in the process, and leaving him wounded on the ground. This gave Optimus the chance to attack Megatron, pulling the Decepticons head off and dumping it on the ground. Optimus then picked up Megatron's Blaster and turned to Sentinel. Sentinel said that he only wanted their race to survive, and that was why he had to betray him. Optimus only said he betrayed himself, before shooting Sentinel In the chest the same way Sentinel had mercilessly executed Ironhide, before firing a second and final blast at Sentinel's head, killing his old mentor for good, and avenging Ironhide he killed.

DOTM Sentinel Prime death

Sentinel Prime is finally finished off by Optimus Prime for betraying his own principles, ending his attempt to restore Cybertron in an emotional way.

Age of Extinction

Following his death, Sentinel's body was taken and dismantled. His head was removed from his body and used for study by KSI. (His head can be seen while Brains was talking about Galvatron)

IDW comic

Sentinel Prime was a direct descendant of the first Cybertronian, Primus, and was believed to be the last of the Primes. He told tales to his much younger Cybertronian brethren of how the Dynasty of Primes had called upon a legendary artifact, the star-powered AllSpark, to give life to their world. But the AllSpark had been lost to history, and their world had tumbled through the cosmos without a star to orbit for eons. Sentinel Prime had plans to rectify this, and he gathered followers who believed in his path to a new age of life on Cybertron. With the help of Optimus, Megatron, and their legions, they searched the planet for the legendary artifact and a way to power it. However, there were the Thetacons, a tribe of separatist Transformers who disbelieved in Sentinel Prime's vision, and warred against him and his followers. This conflict ended when, with the help of Wheeljack, a sun to orbit was brought to Cybertron, and the AllSpark discovered and energized.

Though Sentinel Prime had finally returned the forgotten concept of "freedom" back to Cybertron, he felt he no longer had a part in its path to the future. He was old and tired, and spoke in confidence to Optimus, believing that young Autobot was also part of the Prime lineage and requesting that he take on the mantle of leadership. Though Optimus was too humble to accept, not believing Sentinel's claims about his heritage, Megatron overheard their conversation and became jealous of his "brother." Sentinel formulated another plan for Cybertron's future: it would be governed by Optimus's Science Division and Megatron's Defense Force. By having Optimus investigate the remains of the Primes' civilization, it would encourage him to believe in his lineage.

Alas, after two generations of successful shared leadership, Megatron fell under the sway of The Fallen, and reshaped his Defense Force as the Decepticons, declaring war on Cybertron. Sentinel Prime was at the archaeological dig in Simfur when the first strike took place, and was quick to opt for a technique of self-preservation, rather than attempting to save the Science Division's work. Optimus soon arrived to fend the Decepticons off, and revealed that his studies had proven the truth of Sentinel's words: he was indeed a descendant of the Primes. He did not believe that this made him a born leader, but Sentinel impressed upon Optimus the necessity that he take up command of the Autobots, that Cybertron might be saved from Megatron's destructive ambitions.

As time passed, and the war rolled on with no signs of stopping, Sentinel Prime was forced to make a deal with Megatron to seek out another planet whose resources they can exploit to restore their homeworld. The chosen planet was the resting place of the Primes' Star Harvester. Sentinel recreated the Primes' lost space bridge technology, fashioning hundreds of pillars that would form a bridge large enough to teleport Cybertron itself across the cosmos Sentinel then invented a mysterious "torch" that he promised would end the war. The torch had to be brought into contact with the AllSpark to be activated, so the Autobots launched an attack on the Simfur temple to carry out this action while Sentinel stood by with a spacecraft, the Ark, to await delivery of the active torch. Elita One soon returned with the torch, at which point Sentinel instructed Wheeljack to take the second Ark and collect the remaining Autobots from Tyger Pax, while he himself headed to Simfur to collect Optimus's forces. Upon arrival at Simfur, however, Sentinel's Ark was attacked by Starscream, and was consumed by a huge explosion, leaving all present to believe it, Sentinel, and all aboard had been destroyed.

In actuality, Sentinel's Ark had not been vaporized as believed: it had been teleported away by the space bridge technology it was outfitted with. With all hands knocked into stasis by the explosion, the ship automatically jinked through space and time on a series of random space bridge jumps, until at last, its sensors locked on to the energy of the AllSpark, which had since been ejected from Cybertron and had crash-landed on the planet Earth. On its penultimate jump, the Ark crossed paths with the Decepticon ship Nemesis, which had departed Cybertron just as the war was beginning, and was now also following the AllSpark's trail. The Ark materialized from its jump into the same physical space as the Nemesis, crippling both ships beyond repair; the Ark made one final bridge jump, reappearing in the immediate vicinity of Earth in 1962, where it crashed violently onto Earth's Moon. All the Autobots aboard perished save for Sentinel himself, who was in the crash vault and remained slumbering in stasis.

Dark of the Moon (Tyran 609.23-PX Kappa)

Tyran 609.23-PX Kappa is the universal stream designation corresponding to the PS3 version of the Revenge of the Fallen video game. Its specifications are taken from the game's publishing date.

    • The timeline Tyran 609.23-PX Kappa I corresponds to the game's Autobot campaign, which sees The Fallen being defeated by Optimus Prime.
    • The timeline Tyran 609.23-PX Kappa II corresponds to the game's Decepticon campaign, which sees The Fallen being defeated by Megatron.
  • The events being described sound like an alternate version of Dark of the Moon with elements from Age of Extinction being thrown in.

Following The Fallen's defeat, Megatron considered conquering Earth but realized that the true prize was Cybertron. He went on to gather his army and wage a successful campaign against the Autobots and NEST on Earth. Falling for baited clues that Soundwave left for Sam Witwicky, Optimus Prime took the Xantium to the Moon. Backed into a desperate corner by the Decepticon offensive, Optimus revived Sentinel right on the lunar surface. With Sentinel's aid, Megatron defeated and captured Optimus. With the aid of collaborationist humans, Megatron used space bridge technology to bring Cybertron to Earth orbit, and under Dylan Gould's leadership, humans were put to work strip-mining Earth for resources to rebuild Cybertron.

All of this changed when Lockdown arrived. The bounty hunter demanded that Optimus be handed over to him. Megatron and Sentinel both refused, the former out of pride and the latter out of loyalty. Lockdown then offered a protomatter seed to Sentinel in exchange for Optimus. While Sentinel was sorely tempted, Optimus used the opportunity to reignite Sentinel's sense of justice. Sentinel proceeded to pretend to hand over Optimus, ambush and defeat Lockdown, and capture Lockdown's ship. Allying themselves with the legendary Dinobots, Optimus and Sentinel waged a long guerilla campaign against Megatron and the Decepticons. From this point, timeline begins to shift. Optimus Prime and Sentinel Prime eventually restored freedom to Earth and revitalized Cybertron with the seed.
